What causes bad breath?

Bad breath is a bad odor that comes out of the mouth region consisting of the mouth, throat, and tonsil. This odor is caused by bacteria that grow under the tongue surface throat and tonsil.   • Poor dental hygiene is a chief cause of bad breath. People who wear dentures and don’t clean them very well every night are also susceptible to mouth odor.
  • Certain kinds of foods with a strong odor like garlic, cheese, fish, onion can also contribute to bad breath. Coffee can also be a source of halitosis
  • Smoking and chewing of nicotine and tobacco-based products can also contribute to bad breath. Smoking causes your mouth to dry out, and when this happens, the saliva which is a vital part of the digestive process and aids in removing odor-causing particles is absent thereby causing bad breath.

Having bad breath can be devastating on a person’s confidence and self-esteem.It makes the sufferers uncomfortable in social situation and gathering and all they think about is how to mask the smell from their mouth.

In order to stop this embarrassment and feel free again, here are some top remedies to prevent this problem. Bad breath is one of those situations that doesn’t really have a permanent fix, you have to continuously repeat these tips in order to reduce the chances of bad breath occurring. But before you start in any of these simple to use remedies use a bad breath tester to test your breath.

  • Practice good oral hygiene:

You will have to become very friendly with your toothbrush, mouthwash and learn to floss every day. Brush your gums and teeth for approximately two minutes. Brush immediately after a meal to remove food particles that might be in your teeth or mouth.

Learn to also focus on your tongue when brushing, most people are not aware but bad breath usually begins from the tongue. The normal color of the tongue should be pink when it is white and scaly, then it could be a reason for bad breath.

Use mouthwash daily to rinse your mouth. There have been concerns about mouthwash containing alcohol escalating the problem of halitosis since it dries out the mouth and a dry mouth encourages bad breath. So it is advised that you use an alcohol-free mouthwash to rinse your mouth daily for 30 seconds.

Floss regularly. There could be some food particles hiding in between your tooth that if left for long would contribute to bad breath once the bacteria in your mouth has worked on them.

Flossing helps to remove those food particles. For someone who wears dentures, remove your dentures and clean them thoroughly every night.

  • Visit your dentist regularly:

Book visits with your dentist regularly for professional checkup and cleaning of your mouth. The regular checkup will enable your dentist to find areas where plaque might be and your dentist will be able to reach areas where your toothbrush and floss cannot reach during cleaning. Your dentist will also be able to tell you if there is an underlying cause of your halitosis and prescribe better treatment.

  • Avoid keeping a dry mouth:

Bacteria thrive in a dry mouth, so you have to prevent it by taking plenty of water and reducing your intake of caffeine. Chewing sugar-free gums can also help your mouth provide the needed saliva to make your mouth moist. When your mouth is constantly hydrated, and then there is less chance of having bad breath.

    OOOo this is such an important topic. bad breath can kill a relationship, or even close quarters at work. as for all the herbs you mention, I wonder if any exist in gum form or even as a mouthwash? That sounds like something that would be more doable for most people to find when they’re out shopping. One other thing that helps a lot is making sure to brush the tongue or actually using a tongue scraper.
